Media

Most media coverage of the sex trades is salacious, and doesn’t include the perspectives of people who are in the industry by choice, circumstance, or coercion.

Our seminar teaches people in the sex industry to create strategic responses to media and public events. Participants learn to evaluate press requests, create talking points and stick to them, decide on the best message for the audience, and hold journalists to ethical standards. We also cover the skill needed for interviews, press releases, letters to the editor, developing campaigns, and more.

Speak Up! is a weekend-long seminar offered in New York City. We created Speak Up! in 2009 based on a real need expressed by members of our community for more resources and skills training on how to (a) respond to media requests effectively and safely, (b) engage with the mainstream media in order to get a particular message out, and (c) create our own media campaigns.

Check out the I Am A Sex Worker video public service announcement and the Nothing About Us Without Us: Harm Reduction and Sex Work campaign, both created in Speak Up! media trainings.
